Major Projects

Students will complete three short essays in Chinese on depopulated sites or ruins in China, all to be delivered on July 5, July 19, and August 23, respecitvely.

Grading & Assessment

Students will receive grades for each of their major projects. In class-performance will also be graded based on the following criteria.

  • Pronunciation (1 when student is impossible to understand to 10 for indistinguishable from a native speaker)
  • Fluency (1 for when student uses very slow and disjointed speech to 10 for easily completing proper sentences and moving on to next sentences)
  • Word Choice/Vocabulary (1 for inappropriate vocabulary usage, overly repetitive of simple words to 10 for sophisticated and nuanced usage of specific and natural vocabulary)
  • Preparation (1 for when student is completely unprepared to 10 when studennts made the absolute most effective use of class time)
  • Note: There will be no in-class portion of for this course

Target Audience and Prerequisites

This course is designed for Beginner Chinese students who have completed 1 year (or equivalent) of college Chinese and/or have been tested at or near CEFR A2 level proficiency. Students must prepare and/or bring their own textbook material.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will become comfortable participating in language situations frequently encountered by Beginner Chinese students.
  • Students will explore new ways to express themselves in Chinese.
  • Students will build habits of input leading to stronger listening and reading skills.
