This course teaches basic Attic Greek to young children

Class Sessions: There will be five sessions over the term period.

Assignments and Course Work

Major Projects

For course work, students will prepare

  • a short document with their name and self-introduction,
  • a brief description on their home and family, and
  • a short description of a journey.

These will be delivered on July 5, July 19, and August 23, respectively.

In addition to this, learners will prepare a notebook of simple verb and noun paradigms.

Readings & Course Materials

Selections from Athenaze, Volume I (Italian Edition). Capitolo I-II.

Grading & Assessment

Students will receive grades for each of their major projects. In class-performance will also be graded based on the following criteria.

  • Grammar (1 for complete misidentification of grammatical forms and structures to 10 for fully able to parse sentences)
  • Vocabulary (1 for unable to understand all/basic words to 10 for no vocabulary questions asked)
  • Preparation (1 for when student is completely unprepared to 10 when studennts made the absolute most effective use of class time)

Target Audience and Prerequisites

This course is designed for very young Absolute Beginner Ancient Greek students. Students must prepare and/or bring their own textbook material.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will become comfortable reading very simple Ancient Greek adapted for learners.
  • Students will explore new ways to express themselves in Ancient Greek.
  • Students will build habits of input leading to stronger reading skills.
